Pontifical Day
Venue/Address:
Sanctuary of Divine Mercy
Krakow's churches
Date:
the Sunday preceding 16th October
The pontifical day has been observed in the Polish church since 2001. It is a day of thanksgiving for the pontificate of Pope John Paul II and falls on the Sunday preceding 16th October – the anniversary of the election of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła as a successor of St Peter. The coordinator of the project is the “Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia” Foundation. The celebration operates in four dimensions: intellectual, spiritual, artistic, and charitable. Every year, the an academic church community organises joint prayers at the pontifical window, and Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, a former assistant to the Pope, presides over the Holy Mass celebrated for John Paul II at the Shrine of Divine Mercy. Kraków’s institutions of culture and education also participate at the event.
