For those who miss early music, there will be concerts as part of the 17th Bach Days, this year taking place in the run-up to Easter. The repertoire will refer to the atmosphere of Passion Week with a performance of the reflective and contemplative St John Passion (31 March, Bernardine Church) featuring the young British tenor Greg Tassell as the Evangelist. The soprano part will be sung by Jolanta Kowalska whose talent has been noted by Marc Minkowski (in October last year, the singer took part in his interpretation of Alcina by Handel as part of the Opera Rara cycle). The remaining parts will be performed by Agnieszka Monasterska (mezzo-soprano), Jarosław Bręk (baritone) and Marcin Wolak (bass), under the baton of Stanisław Krawczyński. The evening of 30 March will be in a more chamber mood, with traverso (Małgorzata Wojciechowska), harpsichord (Władysław Kłosiewicz), and baroque cello and viola da gamba (Mark Caudle). Traditionally, the programme also features concerts performed by students of the Academy of Music in Kraków – the next generation enchanted by Bach’s music.
