With a Viennese waltz and a fiery czardas providing rhythmic accompaniment, Johann Strauss’ Gypsy Baron (directed by Laco Adamik) will be making an appearance on the Lubicz Street stage. The premiere performance of this operetta in 1885 in the famous Theater-an-der-Wien brought its creator a great deal of recognition. It was written that Strauss “has drawn dangerously close to the limits of what grand opera can achieve”, something this composer of popular operettas had dreamed of for a long time. The third act in particular, which enraptures through its scale, was greeted by ovations - hundreds of stage extras, real horses and the evoking of an Austrian army triumph must have pleased the Viennese public. However, even with a more modest stage set, the Baron arouses delight – who could resist the rocking waltz, the gypsy ballads and the popular aria Ja, das alles auf Ehr?
Composer: Johann Strauss
Conductor: Tomasz Tokarczyk
