The reconstructed mansion and pavilion of the museum and library, standing among gardens, are home to a collection brought by the eminent collector, Emeryk Hutten-Czapski (1828-1896), the man behind the outstanding collection of Polish coins and medals, a bibliophile and collector of prints, works of art and craft, and items of Polish interest. After the death of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, in accordance with his last will, an independent museum was established here, later to be donated – together with its collection – to the Municipality of Kraków for the National Museum in Kraków in 1903.

The mission of the museum is reflected in the inscription on the façade of the pavilion: Monumentis Patriae naufragio ereptis (To the monuments of the Fatherland saved from obliteration).

When the current all-out renovation is over, the Palace will be home to a permanent exhibition of numismatics: a complete presentation of Polish coins, banknotes, antique coins and medals.
