After the completion in 1967 of complex conservation work, which embellished and emphasised the Gothic character of the structure, the tower was entrusted to the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków.
The 70-metre-high (230 ft) structure built of brick and stone is accessed by a broad flight of stairs flanked with stone sculptures of two lions from a mansion in Pławowice. The room on the ground floor used to serve as an opulent treasury, where the insignia representing the power of the city councillors were kept among other precious objects of gold, silver, and pewter. We can still admire a unique collection of stonemasons’ signs, known as gmerki, here that dates back to 1444.
