During the Nazi occupation, to avoid being transported to Germany, Wojtyła took employment at the Solvay Soda Works. From September 1940 to October 1941, he worked at the stone quarry in Zakrzówek, where he operated the wagons of the narrow gauge railway leading to the factory in Borek Fałęcki. At the same time, he never ceased to attend clandestine classes, originally at the university and later at the seminary.
