Church of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe
Venue/Address:
os. Tysiąclecia 86
The church was built thanks to the obstinacy of Father Józef Kurzeja, who canvassed for the construction of a church for the growing residential district in Mistrzejowice. Cardinal Karol Wojtyła seconded his efforts despite opposition from the powers-that-be, who wanted to make Nowa Huta a secular city. In 1971, in the place where the church stands today, Wojtyła celebrated Midnight Mass under the stars. He consecrated the church after becoming pope in 1983.
Standing in front of the church since 1991 has been the monument to the Holy Father by Kazimierz Gustaw Zemła.
