Ark of the Lord Church

Venue/Address:

ul. Obrońców Krzyża 1

Nearly from the moment of its establishment, the residents of the district of Nowa Huta, intended by the Communist powers to be "the city without God", strove for a permit to build a church.

Karol Wojtyła actively joined in with their efforts. It began with the Midnight Masses at Christmas and Resurrection Masses at Easter that were celebrated under the stars. After an extensive struggle against the Communist authorities, the first church in Nowa Huta was erected in Bieńczyce. Wojtyła celebrated the mass for the commencement of the construction of the church in 1967, and on 15th May 1977 he consecrated the church.
