St Florian's Church
Venue/Address:
ul. Warszawska 1
The first Kraków parish of Karol Wojtyła; he was a curate here from 1949 to 1951. The future pope taught religion, ministered to the older altar boys, and ran courses for young people planning to marry. Yet his main pastoral activity was for the students.
This is how Zofia Lubertowicz remembered him: "(...) he had quite a worn-out cassock, even with a discreet patch by the hem, and even more worn-out boots... These boots told us more than his carefully prepared sermon (...). We were looking at one another and... we already knew. We have a students' pastor! (quoted from: Kwiatki Jana Pawła II, ed. by Janusz Poniewierski, Wydawnictwo Znak, Kraków 2002).
Wojtyła left the parish having received research leave to prepare his higher doctorate. It was then that he moved to Kanonicza 19. Nevertheless, he remained the pastor of the students until 1958.
