St Mary’s Basilica
Venue/Address:
Rynek Główny 5 (Main Market Square 5)
In 1952-1958, Wojtyła was a confessor and preacher here. Even though he was never a curate of Saint Mary's, he regularly exercised his pastoral ministry for the local church. He always listened to confessions in the same booth: in the Southern aisle, opposite the altar with the icon of Our Lady of Ostra Brama. In 1991, during the holy mass in front of the Basilica, the pope beatified Aniela Salawa.
After the attempt on the life of the pope in May 1981, the White March organised by students gathered 500,000 people marching in silence from Błonia Common Green to the Basilica. In 2005, after the death of John Paul II, it was from before the Basilica that the White March of Gratitude went to Błonia.
