Błonia Common Green and the papal stone on the Błonia
Venue/Address:
in the area of Focha, 3 Maja and Piastowska streets
The papal stone was laid on Błonia in 1997, on the 19th anniversary of the inauguration of John Paul II's pontificate, following the initiative of Cardinal Franciszek Macharski. The granite block brought from the Tatras, from the vicinity of Morskie Oko Lake, weighs 26 tons. The caption placed on it reads: "you are the rock".
It was here that most of the Kraków meetings with the faithful took place during the papal pilgrimages. Only once, during his pilgrimage in 1995, did John Paul II fail to visit the congregation in Kraków (this was a few-hour-long visit to the Diocese of Bielsko and Żywiec accompanying his missionary trip to the Czech Republic).
After his death, it was to Błonia that the White March of Gratitude set off from Saint Mary's Church in the Main Market Square.
