Father Laetus Bernatek Footbridge

This bridge over the Vistula for pedestrians and cyclists connects Mostowa and Brodzińskiego Streets and the districts of Podgórze and Kazimierz. It was constructed in the same place as the Charles  Bridge (destroyed by a flood in 1813). It came into use on 30 September 2010 and was constructed according to a design by Prof. Andrzej Getter’s Art Project Studio – it assumes the form of a steel arch (145 metres in length), stretched between the still existing pediments of the Charles Bridge, from which two crossings have been suspended – one for pedestrians and another for cyclists. The whole construction weighs over 700 tonnes. The new crossing has been adjusted to the needs of disabled people. It has been fitted with gentle ramps and the entry point onto the footbridge is straight from the pavement. It bears the name of Father Laetus Bernatek, prior of the Brothers Hospitallers of St John of God's chapter in the 19th century.
