Joiners’ Tower
Venue/Address:
City Walls, ul. Pijarska
This late Gothic tower, built on a square stone base, was extended on a semicircular plane. Such a development resulted from the improvement of artillery. Its increasing range and ever better aim necessitated a transformation of the fortifications. Their constructors realised that towers were more likely to attract enemy fire, for which reason they rounded their shapes.
The Joiners’ Tower is crowned with shooting galleries in the shape of machicolations and a pavilion roof. Below these balistraria openings in the shape of a cross, adapted for shooting crossbows and arquebuses, are visible.
