Haberdashers’ Tower
Venue/Address:
City Walls, ul. Pijarska
The tower dates back to the 15th century and is a good example of mediaeval aesthetics in architecture. Built on a square base of stone, it has a semicircular upper part, developed much like the Joiners’ Tower. Its face is covered with an irregular, bustling freeze arranged from dark and dark-fired brick, the so-called zendrówka. This may be an attempt to mislead the eye by creating an optical illusion to the attackers.
Unlike milliners and drapers, haberdashers specialised in the making of clothing accessories: belts, straps, buttons and other elements to this day known as haberdashery.
