St Bartholomew's Church
Venue/Address:
ul. Klasztorna 11
Standing on the other side of the street, this church belongs to the Cistercian monastic compound. Despite the vast size the main, brick church was used almost solely by the monks and was made available to the people of Mogiła only for the greatest festivities. The parish church of the village was none other than this diminutive church, counted among the most precious examples of wooden architecture in Poland. It is the more precious because - even though built in the Middle Ages - the time of anonymous builders and architects - its builder chiselled his full name and the year of its construction on the entrance portal. This is how we know that the church is the work of Matthias (Maciej?) Mączka and dates back to 1466.
Dating to a somewhat later date, the rococo polychrome wall painting and illusionist paintings may be admired inside. Speaking of illusions: the high altar is painted directly onto the wall of the church.
