America terra noviter reperta
This Latin inscription meaning “America, recently discovered” is situated on the globe known as the Jagiellonian, which is kept in the Jagiellonian University Museum in the Collegium Maius.
This would hardly be significant – after all, we all know today how and when the continent was discovered by Christopher Columbus – were it not for the fact that it dates back to 1508. Therefore it is the oldest known and most probably the world’s first globe depicting the newly discovered continent! It was made in the north of Italy or in the south of France, which may explain why we cannot find Kraków on it. Huh! Even Poland is not marked!
