Meir Balaban (1877–1942)
aka Majer Bałaban, b. 20th February 1877 in Lemberg (Lwów), d. 1942 in Warsaw; rabbi, Polish historian, orientalist, and teacher of Jewish origin, the most eminent researcher of the history of Jews in Poland. Author of famous works including Jewish history and culture with a detailed review of the history of the Jews in Poland (published in 1921) and The History of Jews in Kraków and in Kazimierz 1304-1655 (1931). Died on 26th December 1942 in Warsaw in unspecified circumstances, with one of the hypotheses being that he committed suicide.
