catholic holy masses in foreign languages

Foreigners visited Kraków from the very beginning of its history. The author of the first written record of the city was a Jew at the service of the Arab ruler of Cordoba. The three settlers who were to be in charge of the formation of city institutions came from Silesia and had German-sounding names. Until the mid 16th century all masses in St. Mary’s Church (kościół Mariacki) were held in German and it was only in 1537 that King Zygmunt the Old (Zygmunt Stary) moved German masses to the much smaller church of St. Barbara (kościół św. Barbary). In the 16th and 17th centuries, half of the city houses in the market square belonged to Italian merchants. Commerce was also the domain of Jews, Russians and Armenians who also lived in the city. During the reign of King Stefan Batory the Hungarian colony in Kraków was also on the increase so it is only natural, even today, that holy mass is held across the city in many foreign languages.
