King Zygmunt II August used to say to his subjects: “I am not the king of your conscience”, thus expressing the view that the salvation of the soul is an individual consideration of each and every person. Local gentry, in spite of their many religious disagreements, swore the eternal religious peace. King Stefan Batory issued a special act, which was to prevent any religious tumult in Kraków. He said: “I am the king of the people and human conscience is God’s domain”. It is difficult to believe that at the same time France, the Netherlands, England and Germany were involved in bloody religious wars, and Spain was swept by the inquisition. In the 16th and the 17th centuries Poland was not so much known for the Battle of Grunwald and the Union of Lublin but for its religious tolerance and freedoms.

The Remuh Synagogue is the only synagogue in Krakow where services are held every Friday and Saturday evenings.
