The Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University has operated since 1783, and is the oldest botanic garden in Poland. There are several greenhouse complexes here, the oldest among them being the Victoria, named after the Victoria Amazon water lily growing there. The Jubilee Palm House together with a complex of tropical greenhouses were completed in 1996. Besides a collection of palms of approximately 50 species, it became home to carnivorous (meat eating) plants, tropical crop plants, and the country’s oldest collection of cycads (approximately 20 species). Attention is drawn to the collection of mountain plants especially from the Alps, the Carpathians, and the Caucasus, a collection of crop plants, and a collection of biblical flora. The largest part of Kraków’s Botanic Garden is taken up by the arboretum, a collection of over 1000 species of trees, shrubs and bushes.
In 2010 open from 18 April!
